May 2016

For anyone living on the east coast or the Gulf of Mexico, June 1st of every year is a special day. This marks the start of hurricane season, which for many can cause some anxiety. We’ve been lucky for many years to say the least, considering that the last major hurricane to sweep our beaches was Hurricane Ike in 2008. So, what is to come in between June 1st and November 30th? While the official predictions won’t be released until May 27th by the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration, many other forecasters are throwing their predictions out for thought.

Overall forecasts call for a slightly below to a slightly above average hurricane season in 2016. The average season has 12 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes (Category 3 and above).

Here are the predictions of some notable weather experts:

  • Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project: 12 named storms, five hurricanes, two major hurricanes (categories 3, 4 or 5, with sustained winds of at least 111 mph).
  • Accuweather: 14/8/4, with three U.S. landfalls.
  • The Weather Channel/Weather Co. — 14/8/3.
  • Coastal Carolina University’s Hurricane Genesis and Outlook (HUGO) Project: 13/7/3, with most likely no hurricanes striking the eastern U.S. and one making landfall along the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Met Office (European weather expert): 14 named storms and 8 hurricanes.
