How Glass Is Made

November 2015

Glass has become one of the most popular building materials used today because it offers virtually unlimited aesthetic options, combined with outstanding performance. What ends up as large, sweeping glass panels in a high-rise office building, healthcare facility, school, or other construction project starts as a simple combination of sand, soda ash, limestone, dolomite and some other minor ingredients.

The glass making process commences in the batch house, which is where all of the incoming raw materials are offloaded on to a conveyer and sent to their respective storage silos. The actual batching begins when the raw materials are moved, weighed and mixed, and sent via a conveyor belt to the charging end of the melting furnace. The melting furnace is similar to an old fashioned brick baking oven, but much, much bigger.

October 2012

In the last decade the South Florida has been exposed to a furious hurricane seasons. There is a common misconception that a lower category hurricane is less of a threat than a higher category hurricane. For example, Hurricane Katrina was the costly hurricane in United States history and it was only a Category 3 hurricane when it made landfall. Today, many areas in Florida require new homes to contain hurricane-proof windows, which include homes around the Eastern Seaboard and the Gulf Coast area.

Hurricane Katrina of 2005 was easily the costliest hurricane in United States history with property damages over $81 billion. Storm surge along the Mississippi coast completely destroyed many structures with damage extending several miles inland. Katrina’s storm surge topped and breached levees in the New Orleans metropolitan area resulting in the inundation of much of the city and its eastern suburbs. How to Identify Hurricane Impact Glass Windows?

How to Identify Hurricane Impact Glass Windows?

High-impact glass, also known as laminated glass, consists of two glass sheets with a layer of PVB or resin in between. This structure allows the glass to withstand pressure, making breakage less likely. Unlike regular glass, which shatters into long shards, broken laminated glass stays in its frame. Commonly used in vehicles, high-impact glass can also be used in homes for safety, security, sound reduction and UV control

Some tips to identify Impact Glass Windows.

  1. Look for a permanent mark in one of the four corners of the glass. This mark may include the supplier’s name, place of fabrication, date of manufacture, thickness and any certifications or safety standards the glass meets.
  2. Check the glass for a temporary label. While sheets of impact-resistant glass typically carry a mark on all four corners, the glass may have been cut in a way that excludes the mark. The manufacturer may affix a removable label that states the type of glass along with the information above.
  3. Examine a reflection in the glass. If you don’t find any markings or labels on the glass, hold your hand or an object up to the glass and carefully study the reflection. Because laminated glass consists of two sheets of glass, you should see two different reflections.
